When you take driver’s education classes, they focus primarily on driving techniques and safety procedures.  After all, these are the really important things to know.  It’s only after taking the Driver’s Ed classes that most people learn the other lower level stuff, the stuff concerning car maintenance and car ownership.  If you are new to this stuff, or you just want a refresher course, here are 8 things to know concerning your car. Know how to check your tire pressure

This is an important one because when you drive on tires with low pressure, you get lousy gas mileage and your tires will wear out quicker. Both of these cost you money. Most gas stations have a free air station where you can add air to your tires.

Know when your oil should be changed

First thing to know, it’s not necessary to change your oil every 3000 miles. While the rule of thumb used to be every 3,000 miles, that’s no longer true today. Read your manual to know when your vehicle’s oil change is due but you will likely find it is some 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Motor oils and oil filters are better than they used to be.

Know what it means when your “Check Engine” light comes on

The Check Engine Light (CEL) will light up when your car’s central computer senses that something is wrong.  In most cases, it’s not a serious situation – you can drive home.  But, if your CEL lights up, try and visit a dealer, like ____________________________ or your local garage in the next day or so to make sure it’s nothing serious.  They can read the codes in the car’s computer and that will tell the mechanic what’s going on.

Know how to check the fluids in your car

It’s a good idea to know how to check and “top off” all the fluids in your car. This includes your motor oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid. Your owner’s manual will show you where all these items are located.

Know how to replace your windshield wiper blades

This one is just a simple way to save you some money.  Windshield wiper blades only last 6-12 months and they are easy to replace.  If you want some guidance, there are plenty of YouTube videos that will show you how it’s done.

Don’t forget to put a roadside emergency kit in your car

It’s always a great idea to have a roadside emergency kit in your car. with some flares, a flashlight, a set of jumper cables and some first aid supplies just in case you need it.

Find a good mechanic. Don’t always go with the cheapest or the shop closest to you. Ask your friends for suggestions or play it safe and go to your local brand dealer.  Today’s car are complex and you really need a good mechanic on your side.

If you know these seven different things, you’ll be able to keep your vehicle running for years.
